Toyota Hybrid Opens Up Hybrid System to Competition

Toyota are opening up their hybrid technology to rivals. The Japanese motoring giant has said that the Toyota hybrid technology their Prius and other hybrid models are based on is to receive expanded development and has announced that it may sell its powertrain modules including engines, transmissions and other components to other vehicle manufacturers. It is seeing the increased regulations around lower-emission vehicles as a chance to boost sales and help the industry gain further ground. At Bumblebee Batteries, we can assist you if you do require a replacement battery for your Toyota battery.

A significant move

A growing number of manufacturers have been announcing plans to work with competitors on under-the-hood technologies. Parts and components are being standardised, with competition now being more focussed on packaging and aesthetic features. Toyota has been renowned for using exclusive technology in the past but the manufacturer said it hopes for a change “to a system where we develop technology with our suppliers at an earlier stage … so they can make that technology available to non-Toyota customers.”

Rising costs

The company has expressed concerns about the rising costs of research and development, and spent around $9 billion on R&D last year, a 73% rise on the 2010 figure. It may see the decision to open up their hybrid system as a way to offset these costs.
